101 E. Mifflin St. Built 1923 Madison Landmark
National Register Georgian Revival Balch and Lippert
Now a YWCA
Howard Piper and his brothers wanted to open a grocery store on the Square in 1923, but
that project escalated and resulted in the Belmont Hotel, 101 E. Mifflin St., which was
acquired in 1968 by the YWCA. The Belmont Hotel had nearly 200 rooms and 20 suites. The
brothers later opened Piper's Garden Cafeteria across Mifflin Street.
Piper lived at the hotel until it changed hands when he was 88 years old. “I think the
Belmont should make a wonderful new headquarters for the YWCA,” he said in 1968.
