1845 – The
Greenbush Cemetery was established but would soon run short on space.
1863 – 18 acres of land is purchased from the City of Madison for a new cemetery,
Calvary, located the other
side of Mineral Point Road (Now Speedway) of the new
Forest Hill Cemetery. The new cemetery was
split up between German and Irish parishes. Up to the turn of the 20th century ethnic boundaries were strictly followed. The
German sections were given Biblical names: Blastus, Abednego, Carmel, Enoch, Callistus and Priscilla.
1865 – The first person is buried at Calvary.
Sometime after 1902 – Bodies in the Greenbush Cemetery were moved to Calvary.
Ca. 1905 – The house where the cemetery keeper lived along Speedway Road was removed for more burial space.
1923 – Because Calvary was filling up, more land was purchased and a separate cemetery, Holy Cross, was created
adjacent to Calvary.
1954 – More land is purchased and it, along with Calvary and Holy Cross, were combined into one cemetery named
Resurrection. Resurrection, unlike Forest Hill which serves Madison, is for residents of all of Dane County.
