Central Firehouse
When Madison became a city in 1856 the city charter authorized the formation of three volunteer companies: Fire Engine, Hook and Ladder, and Hose, each composed of up to 70 men. A year later two fire houses were built, 14 S. Webster Street and 125 State Street. The second central fire house, 10 S. Webster St., was purchased from Billings Plow Works in 1881 and used until 1904 when it became the police department "barns".
