In 1976 and 2002 the backstage stairwell at Madison West High School was the site of two rapes.
The three flights of steps connect a costume and music room to the backstage of the auditorium.
In both cases the victim was a 16-year-old girl.
1976 – The comments made by the judge, and the leniency of the sentence he
imposed led to outrage and his being
ousted from office.
2002 – The sister of the boy accused of rape was arrested her after she
attacked the rape victim at school, punching her face and tearing out one of her earrings.
