Fireman
John Engleburger was stationed at
Engine House No. 1 in the late 1800s. He died after being kicked by a horse.
On the night of Jan. 10, 1888, a fireman named George Kechner was asleep at Engine House
No. 1 when he was awakened by the horses that were bucking and kicking in their stalls.
According to the news clipping, Kechner was “nearly paralyzed” when he looked up to see a
ghost beating one of the horses. The horses, he reported, were plunging around in terror.
He tried to call for help but couldn't speak.
Later, Engleburger's ghost appeared again, to an elevator boy in a nearby building whose
“chops were made to chatter” by the haunting. The boy reported hearing a bell for an elevator
on the third floor of the building. He took the elevator up, opened the door, and took on a
“strange gentleman.'” Upon reaching the first floor, the boy opened the door but nobody got
off. He turned around and realized he had nobody aboard at all. The next day he quit his job.
