Picnic Point
Rumors
Indians years ago believed that the point was haunted. They told of several Indian families that
lived on the point leading happy lives until their children were carried off by witches who fattened
them and then ate them.
The grieving Indians prayed to the spirit called Earthmaker. Earthmaker caught the witches and
returned the children to their homes. He turned the witches into hackberry trees. They still stand
at the end of Picnic Point, waving their branches mournfully and moaning into the wind.
