Karl Harter, Madison author, wrote a true crime book on the
Barbara Hoffman murder.
Harter's Hoffman book, "Winter of Frozen Dreams," was filmed in March in Schenectady, N.Y.,
with Thora Birch playing Hoffman and Keith Carradine playing Madison police detective
Chuck Lulling. Lulling headed the investigation that led to the 1980 murder conviction of
Hoffman, a UW-Madison student who worked at a massage parlor and killed a client for the
life insurance payout.
