The 22 residents of Gay Avenue convinced the Blooming Grove Town Board to
change the name of their street to Alvarez Avenue after the UW football coach.
It's a nice tribute to him; it's a slap in the face to the Gay family after whom
the street was named.
Town Clerk Barb Moody said the street was named about 20 years ago for a prominent
Madison family who at one time owned a property on the Capitol Square and the city's
east side.
