Doty Named Streets
In 1836 James Duane Doty platted Madison before the first building was built. He named all the streets on the plat, now downtown Madison, after the signers of the U.S. Constitution Sept. 17, 1787.

There were 39 signers. The list of streets below has 32 streets listed. The other 7 are:
1. Pinckney St. was named for two Pinckney’s who signed.
2. George Read – No Street named for him. There was one planned but absorbed by the St. Paul railroad.
3. Thomas Fitzsimons – No Street named for him. There was a Fitzsimons St. on Dotys plat but that area became the UW campus and it never came to be.
4. & 5. Robert Morris, & Gouvernor Morris – There was a Morris street on Doty’s plat but it’s name was changed to Main Street. Another street then named Morris near Charter & Univ.
