Doty made it double the width of the other streets because he understood the power of the view from the Capitol to the lakes.

The southern half was renamed Monona Avenue in 1877, then to Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in the 1990s.

Originally spelled Wiskonsin on Doty's first plat.
