Badger Ordnance Works Baraboo, WI
Badger Ordnance Works was a munitions manufacturing facility located in near Baraboo, WI.
At 5 miles long north-south and 3 miles wide east-west it was a large target.
Very early on New Years Day 1970
Karl & Dwight Armstrong
stole an airplane from Morey Airport in Middleton. Dwight had received his pilot’s license from
the facility only months earlier. This is how they acquired the name
The New Yeras Gang.
They flew over Badger Ordnance Works and dropped three self made bombs made of a nitrate and fuel
oil mixture in one-gallon mayonnaise jars. The bombs did not explode, in fact they weren’t even
found until January 6th. Karl had been calling newspapers telling of the event but no one believed
him until he linked it to the stolen airplane and a search was initiated.
They landed the plane at the Sauk Airport near the plant and walked to a predefined location where
an accomplice was waiting to drive them back to Madison. When they returned they joined the New
Years Eve party in progress at
