Railroad Tracks Crossing

The Chicago Northwestern and the Milwaukee railroads crossed tracks in the middle of Monona Bay in 1854. This is the only place in the world where two railroad tracks cross in a lake!

The tracks, built on fill material, had their problems. One day the track sank five feet due to compression of the peat and marl fill from the train’s weight.
