Immigrant son of the university's first janitor
Became the city's largest coal and ice dealer buying the ice-house on Lake Mendota at
N. Hamilton in 1882, then another on Lake Monona.
The area on Lake Mendota where the ice house was was named Conklin Park. Renamed
James Madison Park in 1963.
