Madison's 55th Mayor 1997 - 2003

Apr 6, 1999 Sue Bauman easily defeated Eugene Parks in Madison's mayoral race, 35,206 to 8,294. Bauman became the city's first female mayor two years earlier when she was elected to finish out the remaining two years of Paul Soglin's term. Parks was the first Madison African American to run in a general election for mayor.
