Appointed as provost in 1964; title changed to chancellor in 1965.
Robben Fleming 1964-1967: Fleming was appointed by President Harrington as part of the
reorganization of the university into a system. Harrington felt it was time for the
Madison campus to be administered outside of the president's office. Fleming's title was
initially provost but was changed to chancellor in 1965. He provoked controversy by
providing his personal check to bail out 11 student war protesters. He left the
university to become the president of the University of Michigan.
