John Hiram Lathrop – Chancellor – 1849-1858
Born January 22, 1799
Came to Wisconsin from the University of Missouri
September 1849 Elected first chancellor of the University of Wisconsin
January 16, 1850 Inaugurated
Recommended the university's seal with the words “Numen Lumen”
Two sons died while in office and buried at Forest Hill Cemetery
July 27, 1858 resigns to became a professor of moral philosophy, ethics and political science
Remained as acting chancellor until Henry Barnard's arrival in mid 1859
1859 Accepted the presidency of Indiana University
1860 Returned to Missouri as a law professor
1865 He again was elected president of the University of Missouri
August 2, 1866 Died while still in that office
